No Firefox OS for Samsung (For now)

2013 February 26

Samsung (Korea’s tech giant) is said to be not interested in manufacturing a smartphone that will run on Mozilla’s Firefox OS (well, at least not for now).

Today, the Korean tech giant is known as a dominant player in the smartphone market, and has other mobile operating system priorities in the likes of Google’s Android and Tizen.

According to CNET: “Samsung is the top dog in the Android market – its new flagship Galaxy S4 smartphone will debut March 14 – and the most obvious OS alternative is Tizen.”

The Korea based tech giant is one of the partners of Tizen. Tizen is one of the Linux-based smartphone platforms expected to finally launch this year.

CNET also noted that the Korean tech giant plans to launch its first Tizen smartphone this year (July or August).

Firefox OS already has the support of other phone manufacturers (i.e. LG Electronics, Huawei, Alcatel, and ZTE). This is despite Samsung’s lack of interest for now.

“In addition, a Spanish startup called Geeksphone is building two models for Firefox OS developers. Those phones, the Geeksphone Peak and Keon, should go on sale through the company’s web site’ in coming weeks’ the company said today”.

With the success of the Samsung Galaxy range (more particularly the Samsung Galaxy S3 and Samsung Galaxy Note 2), it is quite obvious why the Samsung would snob Firefox for now. Well, at least the Korean tech giant is planning to launch its Tizen smartphone this year, it’s just that now is not the right time for Samsung to end the momentum of its Android-powered smartphones.
