Samsung Sells More Phones Than Nearest Rivals Apple In 2012

2013 January 25

Over the past three years there has been a clear divide in the smartphone market with Samsung and Apple breaking away from the chasing pack to become clear front runners. In 2012 it seems that Samsung came out on top by shipping more handsets than their rivals thanks to some superb devices like the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 2.

During 2012 Samsung shipped more phone handsets than their closest rivals Apple. Over the twelve month period Samsung managed to shift a massive 700 million devices although this number represents a smaller growth than the company enjoyed in 2011. In terms of smartphone sales Samsung claimed 30 per cent of the total market with 213 million handsets such as the Samsung Galaxy S3 sold. Apple on the other hand managed to claim 19 per cent of the share thanks to the 135.8 million devices that they shipped. As far as Apple is concerned this represents a huge 46 per cent increase on the companies 2011 results. Nokia used to lead the way when it came to phone sales but the Finnish manufacturer shifted 100 million units, a number totally eclipsed by Samsung. In 2011 Nokia held a 15 per cent total share of the market but this has slipped away to just 5 per cent last year.

Samsung can thank a great range of superb handsets for their continued dominance of the market. The Samsung Galaxy S3 was the best selling phone over the last 12 months and the handset continues to sell well moving through 2013. The model is the successor to the best selling Samsung Galaxy S2 and offer some superb specification including a 4.8 inch Super AMOLED display and a powerful quad core processor. Samsung have also introduced a new miniature version of this phone in the shape of the Galaxy S3 Mini while consumers wanting the ultimate in screen size and processing power are catered for with the excellent Samsung Galaxy Note 2.

Samsung will be delighted by the news that they have lead the way throughout 2012 thanks to excellent handsets like the Galaxy S3 and the Galaxy Note 2. With some super devices lined up for the coming months they will be hoping that this success can be replicated in 2013.
